Qi ran a series of calculations in his mind. It was true that running into an unexpected slipstream corridor would wreak havoc on an unprepared ship, but the details of how to achieve that using a modified probe went way over his head. Thankfully, Jadaris seemed to have a plan. For a moment, everything clicked into place. They had a fighting chance.
Then, red alert sounded. Qi didn’t need to guess what had happened. The Cardassians were onto them, or close to it.
"We'll have to continue this later Commander. It doesn't sound like we have any more time,” Jadaris said, jogging off to Engineering. Qi watched the chief engineer’s hulking figure disappear behind the automatic doors. He turned back toward his console and froze. Every member of his small team was watching him, their nervous faces bathed in harsh red light. He fixed his brow into what he hoped was a look of determination, rather than worry.
Senior officers don’t have the luxury of showing fear, he chided himself.
Before he had a chance to make some inspiring speech, every screen in the lab flashed to the same message.
[evacuation… non essential personnel… proceed to…] Qi’s stomach sank as he skimmed the message.
“Alright, drop what you’re doing and make your way to the Glennis. No need to panic, just move quickly,” he announced, his voice stronger and steadier than he expected.
Does Braggins expect me to evacuate as well? He wondered. It didn’t matter. He knew he could help.
