Sebastian was feeling better after a good night’s sleep. He was feeling a tiny bit homesick, especially for his Abuela (grandmother), especially her Jericalla ( A custard from Guadalajara similar to crème brûlée, featuring a distinctively browned, slightly caramelized top layer from the oven) His Abuela Rosa was a legend in the Guadalajara area. Rosa was a kind woman; she was a homeopathic doctor. She knew which plants were good for what ailed you, but she was also an artist; she painted in watercolors, oil, and acrylics. She was also a potter. Her house was like an idyllic oasis. Rosa was kind, but also could be very strict, especially if anyone in her family didn’t behave or listen to her advice. Sebastian remembered one time when one of his cousins got expelled for something he didn’t do. Rosa went to the school and within thirty minutes his cousin Manuel was back in school with a full apology from the Principal.
Rosa was his mother’s mother; the Aguilar women were strong, independent women, and Sebastian learned early not to disobey his mother or his Grandmother. Right, Sebastian wanted to visit with his Abuela. When he was a freshman at the Academy, he created an interactive Holographic program of his Abuela Rosa,
“Computer, run Cortez Abuela Rosa 001.” Instructed Sebaastian.
[ Loading Cortez Abuela Rosa 001, enter when ready,] started the Holodeck computer.
The black and yellow grid pattern had been replaced with a traditional adobe-style house, complete with a central courtyard with a reflecting pool, and behind it was Rosa’s garden, complete with herbs and assorted vegetables. And various fruit trees. He stepped in, and the doors closed behind him,
Sebastian searched the Garden, “Abuela, ¿dónde estás?”( Grandma, where are you?) Then, from behind a blueberry bush, appeared an adorable little woman with dazzling green eyes, brilliant shoulder-length red hair, and lightly tanned skin; she was dressed in a lovely floral print and an apron. She smiled. “ Ay, Sebastián, mi pequeño chile, qué alegría verte. Ven a darle un beso a tu abuela.( Oh, Sebastian, my little chile pepper, it is so good to see you. Come kiss your grandmother.)
Sebastian ran over and gave her a hug and a kiss. She looked up into his eyes and said, “Te ves preocupado. Ven, sentémonos y cuéntale a tu abuela qué te pasa.” ( You look troubled. Come, let's sit, and you tell your grandmother what's wrong) Rosa led Sebastian to a table under a pergola; on the table was a pitcher of. Agua de Jamaica. It is a tart, refreshing herbal infusion made by boiling dried hibiscus flowers, sweetening the liquid with sugar or cane sugar, and serving it cold over plenty of ice.
Rosa smiled as she poured her grandson some ice tea, Abuela, hace poco completé una misión y no me desempeñé tan bien como debería haberlo hecho. Mis ideas y sugerencias eran válidas y tenían sentido, pero mis superiores parecieron descartarlas sin siquiera considerarlas. ( Grandmother, I recently completed a mission, and I didn't perform as well as I should have. My ideas and suggestions were valid and made sense, but my superiors seemed to dismiss them without giving them any consideration)
( Sebastian, you're a young officer; just because the senior officers didn't implement your suggestions didn't mean they didn't consider them; it just might have been a case where your suggestions didn't fit their needs at the moment. It doesn't mean that they didn't think your ideas weren't brilliant.
Sebastian smiled. His grandmother always gave the best advice. She was right: superior officers had to save face, if a junior officer had a better idea, they could freely admit the junior officer was right; they could admit that they didn't know something that the junior officer knew. What Rosa was trying to say was that Sebastian should just give it time, eventually the Senior Officers will come around and respect your ideas. Just don’t force it.
Sebastian realized he was in a Holodeck fantasy, that this wasn’t really his Abuela, but it made him feel better. Sebastian knew he had to just relax and let things happen in its natural pace. That testing junior officers was a Star Fleet tradition; senior officers didn’t want junior officers getting a swelled head, it made perfect sense.
Sebastian kissed Rosa.
“Computer, end program. “ Said Sebastian.
Sebastian left and went to the mess hall for a bite to eat.
