Reyna appeared to be thinking hard about something for a few minutes. Finally, she appeared to come to a decision and leaned forward to talk with Emma more quietly, hesitating as she searched for the words.
"Imagine if your parents weren't around when you were born. If those taking care of you were more like very complicated versions of an EMH. It's possible to simulate how people learn, but it isn't really how programs learn, so teaching you things becomes...complicated. They can cover the basics though and once you reach a certain level, they can teach classes at the Academy and be great instructors for certain things. The trick is that there are gaps in that sort of methodology, so it takes more effort on your part to be able to study and learn to get through those situations. Now, given all that, what if you had a magic way of doing that kind of learning. Say I gave you a problem, but the instructions available are limited, but you can put on a magic thinking cap and study the problem. In fact, you can read everything ever written about the problem, thus eventually finding the answer, but it takes time. That's where the magic thinking cap comes in though. The entire time you were studying, reading and learning, it was only in the blink of an eye. How many times do you think you might be be able to do that before you became out of sync with your real life?"
She looked down at her hands and added, "This is all hypothetical, of course. Thought experiments and analogies are great tools to help us understand complex issues. I'm just curious what you think that might do to a person over time."
Reyna then shifted in her seat and looked uncomfortable for a moment. She stretched a little and flexed, appearing to fight with a stiff joint or muscle and it responded with a series of pops that Emma could relate to during growth spurts. When she was done, Reyna appeared more comfortable for the moment, but her behavior before that brief moment had told Emma that at least some of the thought experiment had not been hypothetical. Reyna wasn't very good at lying, at least not with Emma. That was both reassuring and a bit unsettling at the same time. This unique time together had created an interesting kind of trust between them. She had used his own thoughts and feelings to create the illusion of Emma. Sharing your thoughts and fears with someone was a bit scary, but also a little liberating. It required trust though and they were quickly building that between them. Emma couldn't read Reyna's mind, but this was obviously her way of trying to share something with Emma.
