Qi folded his arms.
“Out of the loop? It’s a diplomatic incident, not a cocktail party,” he groused. He couldn’t disagree as strongly as he wanted to. Starfleet Command made its own decisions about how much information to withhold. If the Cardassians truly had kidnapped the Federation president, a leak could spell disaster. Their last chance to avoid a war would go up in smoke.
“Well, let’s make sure that the Bridge is on the same page. We have to assume that the President is on the station until we’re given reason to assume otherwise,” Qi said. His voice trailed off, like he was trying to think several moves ahead in a particularly complicated game.
He straightened his back and tapped his combadge, trying to hide any uncertainty.
“Qi to Qab’ataar: I have an update on the probe data. It appears that the Federation President’s personal transport is docked at the Starbase. We haven’t been able to confirm the whereabouts of the President.”
Not knowing. He hated that. He wanted to scan everything. He couldn’t.
“Let’s see if we can get more data about what’s going on with the station. We need to know if the hostages are trying to communicate or plan an escape,” Qi said finally. For now, he knew his next move, even if the game was still unclear.
