While Sovar appreciated that Lieutenant Commander Miller felt comfortable dropping formalities already, the Commander had a little more reservation. They had only just met, after all. However, Sovar did have to remind himself that some officers were able to drop protocol much more easily; several officers were like that on the Susquehanna. It was also something that revealed more about Miller’s personality.
Listening as he enjoyed more berries, Sovar took something that she had said with an utmost seriousness. He was not sure that she even realized that she had given him perhaps the best insight that he could have asked for. Indeed, he might face some resistance in covering for Commander Coleman. It would not be the position itself, nor would it be about the person swapped, per se.
We're a loyal crew and not just to the ship, Miller’s words echoed in his mind even as he continued to take in all that she was saying.
The other suggestions were standard fare and appropriate to Sovar’s current situation. Being himself was something he had already planned on doing. Getting to know the crew was also a part of his plan, and meeting the auburn haired Lieutenant Commander while touring the Science Complex had been felicitous serendipity. Earning respect, however, would be the harder thing to do. Particularly in light of Miller’s revelation.
“Intriguing,” his brow rose after the Chief Science Officer had finished.
“Of what you have said, earning trust will be the true difficulty that I foresee. With limited time before launch, gaining any of that trust will have to be done during the mission. A most inopportune timing.”
Sovar noshed on a couple more berries, his mind thinking briefly.
“Time will bring all things to pass.”
Again he found himself reaching for more berries, finding comfort in each handful. Strategizing the situation would be unhelpful, he knew. There was little more that Sovar could do that he had not already planned on doing. Instead, he would have to take his time. Focus on the team. Be sincere. Find moments to share triumphs with them. Keep his word. And take definitive action as needed.
“These truly are delicious,” Sovar’s eyes lit up again as he considered the milaberries, and he looked to the Lieutenant Commander just then.
“Thank you, Aeryn, for introducing me to milaberries. And for your candour. Would it be impolite of me to harvest more?”
