Chief Medical Officer Pax Cassidy recording
Things have been running smoothly enough since our last mission, though my position as Chief Medical Officer continues to present interesting challenges. The medical needs of the Yeager’s crew are simpler on average compared to my patients on the hospital ship — yet I catch myself fussing over them more. Maybe I’ve always had this instinct, I’ve just never had time to dote. On the Reyes, we would see hundreds of patients at a time before moving on to the next planet. If we were lucky, we might stay in the same system for a few weeks before moving on. I saw more than 4,500 patients during my last year aboard the Reyes. Now, I’m responsible for a complement of 120 souls. Somehow, the stakes seem uncountably higher.
Then there’s the matter of Ian — Ensign Elliot. I still haven’t found a way to keep my composure around him. Without even trying, he breaks through my defenses like a virus. I’ve never been this infatuated. Every cell in my body wants to let things play out between us, but I worry about what it could mean for my crew if I allow something like this to compromise my judgment. I think I should keep my distance until I can decide how to handle this.
