“What project? What do you mean? On the Voyager? On another ship?”
Jadaris closed the door and brought up a hologram of the USS Magellan.
"I wasn't part of the prototype project aboard the USS Spirit, but I was part of the engineering team that installed them on the Yeager-class scouts."
“Were you improving it? Installing it? On this ship?”
Jadaris poked at his PADD,
"I've raised your clearance so you can do your job on the ship, but benamite produces a subspace harmonic that the quantum field focus amplifies through the deflector. That harmonic is then used to generate a quantum field in subspace, with the front of the ship being used to push through the current rather than the engines directly. Unlike a warp bubble, the quantum field already exists, but we push ourselves into it. The more classified stuff, is that I worked on trying to synthesize the stuff through artificial methods, and I'm still working on solving that problem as a geophysicist. However, benamite decays rapidly, and artificial benamite is highly unstable, decaying in minutes rather than months. When we use the QSD, the drive destabilizes the crystals, which is why we have to let the drive cool down, so that we don't fracture the benamite."
He sighed and added,
"There is a shortage of benamite at all times Ensign. We have to conserve what we have and make it last. If it fails, we lose the drive, and though I could synthesize more with the research I've done, doing so could potentially destabilize the quantum corridor, killing everyone aboard the ship. That's how dangerous using this drive is, and why I worked on the subspace field calculations for both the Magellan and the Yeager, because of how dangerous it is to even use the drive."
[We advise preparedness for combat readiness.]
Jadaris sent a green signal to Security, advising them that Engineering was on standby and would be ready to receive security personnel at critical locations in Engineering.
