Jez felt as if she was in a dense fog, her brain was trying to process what Mike had told her, but it was hard for Jez to be emotionally involved at this moment, it was as if she was watching everything happening in slow motion, Yes, she wanted to cry uncontrollably, but those tears wouldn’t necessarily be for her parents, but for Mike and his wife. Yes, she loved her parents, as that’s what children are supposed to do, but her parents were always focused on their work. They would work hard excavating a dig site during the day and catalog and test hypotheses at night, often ignoring Jez. However, Mike and his wife T’Sara were like her second parents. Mike taught her martial arts, while T’Sara would read her stories.
Suddenly, Cindy spoke, "First, I wish to express to you both my condolences for your loss. I'll be brief, so as not to interrupt this difficult moment, but it is with purpose."
“ Mike, wait!.”. Said Jez, putting a hand on her Mentor’s shoulder. Jez stood there blinking. It was truly an emotional time; her heart was racing, and her breathing was a bit ragged.
Mike froze as Jez touched his shoulder; he could feel her shaking. His eyes widened as the artificial life form handed him a small device, "This is a unique subspace comm that is encrypted and uses standard subspace as a carrier, but a unique frequency modulation. You'll be contacted when information is available. The Federation can't help, but family can. A...private group...has been sent to investigate. Consider them independent, but they're well-trained and unique. Before you ask, no, you can't go with them."
Jez was truly surprised when Cindy stated, "Other assistance and measures have been taken for now, just in case. We'll talk more another time, but know that you're not alone. We already sent someone to bring a friend to come and help you through this difficult time. I'll now leave you in peace, but Jez...we're here to help."
Jez knew that Mike couldn’t stand still, to be locked out of an investigation, but something told her that now was not the time for rash action. “I don’t think we should be investigating anything, given the political tensions between the Klingons, the Gorn, and the Federation. Perhaps, it's best to let the dead rest in peace.” Stated Jez, her voice sounding distant. “I think if we give the murderers time,, let them think they got away with it, they will get sloppy, they will tell the wrong person, and those people will seek us out,” announced Jez, as she stood looking off in the distance.
“Teddy Bear, why don’t you stay and visit with me for a while?” Asked Jez, her tone not demanding, not pleading, but a casual longing, a need to feel safe.
“Teddy Bear, really.” Protested Mike. Mike could tell that Jez needed a sense of stability right now, “ I do need to gather some supplies before I head out, and my ocular implant could use some maintenance.” Said Mike, his voice reassuring.
Jez smiled and turned to Cindy, saying, “Thank you...,” knowing that Commander Talion was behind this Special group.
Jez quickly put on a brave, happy face and said, " This is a celebration, we can deal with our sadness later, for now, let's have some fun."
