Ameen had barely typed the first three sentences of his official Starfleet incident report when the sharp chime of his desktop communications console broke the quiet of the ready room.
He paused, his fingers hovering over the interface, and tapped the flashing transmit button. Commander Keir's voice filled the room.
[First Officer to the CO. Our injured are being treated in sickbay, nothing for me to do there. I have the bridge unless you need me, Keir over.]
Ameen took another sip of his coffee, appreciating the Acting First Officer's prompt return to the command center. With Sickbay securely under Doctor O'Fee's control and the alien puzzle in Amila's capable hands, the bridge was exactly where Keir needed to be.
"Acknowledged, Commander," Ameen replied, his voice projecting clearly toward the desk receptor. "You have the conn. Ensure we remain at condition green and maintain our resumed heading. I will be in here compiling the preliminary logs for Command."
He paused for a fraction of a second, making sure to acknowledge his second in command's efforts during the crisis.
"Good work down there today, Keir. Let me know immediately if there are any changes in our guests' status, or if Lieutenant Ra'an makes a breakthrough with that data module. Ameen out."
He closed the channel. The room returned to the steady, comforting sub-sonic thrum of the warp engines.
Now, he thought, pulling the PADD back to the center of his desk with a heavy sigh, how exactly do I explain to Starfleet Command that we just hot-wired a hundred-thousand-year-old sleeper ship?
He cracked his knuckles, took another hit of Hannah's perfect coffee, and went back to typing.
