Ensign Ava Baldwin was still at her post on the bridge. She noted that the aliens were now aboard and in Sickbay. She began to collect a team to be in sickbay in case the aliens were violent when they came out of stasis. But as she discovered, Lt Gath had already organised the security team, and they were now on station.
Ava was going to put herself on that team, but Lt Gath had not invited the Ensign, and she felt disappointed. Having lived on Earth all her life, she felt a small amount more than other Vulcans. Her Vulcan training stabilised her feelings so that she appeared as calm as a ... Vulcan. In some way, she was like a hybrid Vulcan, part Human, part Vulcan, and in other ways, she was the quintessential Vulcan, except that she was more accommodating of human behaviour. Humans would not notice any difference between Ava and any normal Vulcan. Humans only saw the ears and said to themselves, “Vulcan”. But Vulcans would immediately spot the difference. They were able to pick up on some small trait of her personality, a subtle difference, and realise that Ava was not born nor bred on Vulcan. Her name gave them the biggest clue. No true Vulcan would take on a human name.
But for Ava, she was who she was. And be dammed if any prejudiced Vulcan was going to worry her. They would have to lump it or like it.
