"Would you like some?" Tyra asked, shaking a proffered bottle of bourbon. "Or anything from the replicator?"
“Honestly, just a black coffee thanks,” Mara replied, as she took the offered seat. “I don’t drink. Tried it, decided I’m plenty crazy enough without addin’ alcohol into the mix,” she finished with a self-deprecating grin.
The Security Chief accepted the drink with a nod, leaning forward with her elbows resting on her knees, the mug cradled in her hands as she listened to what the CO had to say. She stayed quiet, making a ‘zipping it’ gesture across her lips at the ‘rubbing off’ comment, but otherwise just taking in every word.
"What I'm trying to say is that I know I expect a lot and I know I don't make your job easy. I appreciate the care you put into your job and I don't expect you to suffer in silence forever, just maybe during briefings," Tyra finished with a grin.
“I mean, I think we’ve found out the hard way that there’s no chance of me stayin’ quiet forever,” Mara replied with a waspish grin of her own, before she took a sip of coffee and leaned back.
“Honestly, that briefin’...” She shook her head slowly. “There was no part of it that was normal, and it really threw me. You put me face to face with the enemy, I can handle that. Been there, seen it, done it, since I was way, way too young. But sittin’ in briefin’s with people, that’s new to me. I’ve been in 2 in my life. And unfortunately for us both, you saw the absolute worst of me in both of ‘em.”
Calleja chuckled dryly.
“I still flinch at the memory of the one on the Philly. And I’ll see that last one play out in my mind at 0300 for the next few weeks too. But I’ll learn from ‘em. Honestly, if you don’t mind doin’ with me what your old boss would do with you, then that would really help me. Knowin’ I’ll get my chance and get listened to will help cool my jets.”
She pulled her lips back in a feral smile.
“That ain’t always been so. The muscles and the accent apparently made my take on things easy to dismiss. And I know I don’t help myself by gettin’ riled up. But yeah. I’ll take any help I can get to deal with that fuckin’ great chip on my shoulder.”
Not for the first time, Mara wasn’t sure if she’d just tried to accept an offer that wasn’t being made. But if it had been, then having an open communication channel was something she would absolutely take with both hands.
