Trying to remain an optimist, Gath said, "Gath to Baldwin, I want you to see what the computer database on their world might have about their languages. It might be helpful if we could read their consoles and it these people wake up, we're going to want to have the translator primed so that we can speak with them. Let me know what you come up with. It is hard to believe that these people were already floating around in this ship at a time when most of our cultures were still using crude tools. While we were figuring out how to go from stones to metals, they were attempting to expand into the stars. It seems a shame that they appear to have only succeeded in blowing up their world."
While he waited for a reply, he continued to look around the inside of the craft. Part of him wondered if there might be some form of other genetic material in other stasis that would qualify it as a colony ship. It was very unlikely that the few individuals would be able to constitute a viably diverse enough genepool for their species to survive long if they were all that was left. He was floating around inside a space version of an archeological find. It was not buried in the ground, but it was quite ancient. Space could preserve things quite well, but it was also a potentially very dangerous and unforgiving environment as well. They had been alive out here for a very long time, yet a couple of them might only have less than a minute left to live. What were the odds of the crew of the Zephyr being witness to that moment? He thought that sometimes the universe had a strange sense of humor...or perhaps it was on purpose.
