Ian walked towards Sickbay with perhaps more of a pep in his step than was normal. He alternated between gripping his tool kit too tight and too loose, resulting in his hands hurting or the kit almost falling on the ground.
Passing a Science officer waiting for the Turbolift, Ian smiled what was probably too widely at her. He had no time to feel self-concious about it; she didn’t seem to even see him.
Before entering Sickbay, he made himself pause and take a deep breath. There was nothing to be nervous about. Nothing. He was an Engineer. The ship was broken. He was just going around and seeing what needed fixing.
He entered.
No one was there. Well, that wasn’t true. There were people here. People in Medical blue. There were patients here. Patients with black and blue bruises and red and black burn marks, and blood of varying colors running down their vaious body parts.
“He’s not here.” Someone said, as they briskly walked past Ian. He blinked at them, not understanding what they were saying.
“Huh?” That was the sound that fell out of his mouth. His body automatically moved to follow the person, who was now neatly stacking medical supplies on a shelf.
“He’s not here.” They repeated, half looking over their shoulder at him.
“I – uh – I’m here to fix – to see if you need anything fixed?” All he could do was stammer.
“No, we’re good!” The med tech said with a mock cheerfullness, even as part of the ceiling crumbled to the floor across the room. “We can wait until Ronnie gets here.”
Who the hell is Ronnie?? Ian was genuinely baffled now.
“You look hungry.” The tech said, looking at Ian purposefully. “You should go eat.”
Ian’s mind felt blank, he felt as if his thoughts were stuttering, as well.
“I – uh – okay.”
Not knowing what else to do, Ian left without another word, heading now towards the Crew Mess.
