The forcefield protected those present from not only radiation, but also the superheated plasma exhaust of the Yeager's overcharged engines. Had the forcefield not been raised, even the slightest crack in the vent would have reduced everyone present to irradiated vapour.
The trail of Trill DNA had ended at the hatch. Whether or not Tomer had gone through was impossible to determine, as any trace of his presence would have been burned away by the torrent of superheated gas.
That said, given there seemed to be no trace of Tomer anywhere else, and there was no other accessible way out of the Impulse exhaust duct except to either enter the reaction chamber or exit the ship. All evidence was now pointing to Tomer still being inside when the hatch had been sealed. That had been long enough ago now that, even if there had been anything left after being blasted by superheated and radioactive gas, it would have long been blown out into the cosmos.
