Chief of Science Log
Recording ....
This is the first chance that I've gotten to update my log since we arrived at the Nebula, and quite frankly, I don't know where to begin. The first two probes were launched successfully, and after that, things didn't exactly go to plan; then again, they never seem to do so where Artemis is concerned. Of course, no one expected to find a Klingon freighter hiding in the nebula, or a hidden base for that matter, but I digress and should start from the beginning. So yeah, a Klingon freighter, one that tried to run, but it didn't get very far, according to what happened on the Bridge. I was in the science lab at the time, although it didn't stop me from running the sensors and keeping a close eye on things. A team was sent over, and by the time they got back, I was already on the Bridge.
The probes proved their worth once more as they gave us the trail from where the freighter had come from, and after it had been destroyed, we headed that way. A plan was then made to investigate this base in the middle of nowhere, which shouldn't have existed and that involved taking a shuttle with Mara in charge and me being second in command. I won't lie, it felt good to be off the ship, to be able to combine my particular skill set without being a liability. However, the most important question was to find out if this was still a Dominion stronghold or had the Klingons gotten lucky with whatever operation they were running?
I won't lie, it initially appeared to be a sophisticated setup, but the reality is going to be something I won't forget in a hurry. About a dozen Klingons were waiting for us, trying to be smart, but we were smarter and soon took care of them. Leaving us with our original objective, splitting into two teams, one to check out the lab, and the other the holding pen, and to also find the command centre. My team walked into something from an old horror movie, abandoned, nothing hardly working, and what we found in the command centre was gutwrenching. Clones left to fend for themselves after the Dominion had left years ago, awoke early and formed their own society, until the Klingons arrived and essentially trashed the place, taking and selling what they could. Leaving the clones to die without the proper supplements, not caring that they couldn't help them get the place up and running again.
The remains and smell of the refrigeration unit, ugh, I can still remember it. It was a difficult situation to be in, and when it came down to it, the surviving clones chose to end their lives, to end their suffering and prevent a horrible and slow death. What passed as their leaders took that responsibility away from us, yet I can't help but feel sorry and some compassion for them, regardless of who they were and why they had been created. In the end, we detonated three torpedo warheads, preventing anyone from restarting the colony we found, and it was the right thing to do.
What's next? Shore leave and finally dealing with the end of my relationship - not an easy task, considering how much I loved Beka. But as someone who's had her fair share of heartache, I'll bounce back.
