Midshipman Security Officer Ava Baldwin stepped confidently into her new quarters after beaming aboard the USS Zephyr.
The quarters are satisfactory, she noted, placing the pad containing her orders and travel documents on the small table. After carrying her luggage into the bedroom, she took a moment to collect her thoughts on the dramatic shift in her life.
Ava was craving coffee; three days without caffeine had left her feeling more than a bit uncomfortable. Her journey had included a shuttle to a starship orbiting Earth, accompanied by classmates assigned to various roles throughout Federation space. Upon reaching the Zephyr, another shuttle had transported her close enough to beam aboard before completing its next mission.
Now aboard the ship, she felt a strong sense of accomplishment as she embarked on her Starfleet career. Years of study, perseverance, and her mother’s expectations were behind her. Ava had finally mastered the discipline and logic her mother demanded.
This environment will be different; the Vulcans onboard will not seek to undermine me as some did in the Academy classes.
Often dismissed as not a "real" Vulcan, Ava was born on Earth to Vulcan parents and had never set foot on her home planet. Educated in both Vulcan and human ways, she sometimes embodied more human characteristics than Vulcan ones, thanks to her progressive parents.
In her early twenties, she faced a mental breakdown triggered by the senseless murder of her father, a traumatic event she witnessed firsthand as he died protecting her. This pain was compounded by years spent obsessively pursuing the truth behind her father's murder. While the individual responsible had been convicted and was serving time in a correctional facility, Ava refused to accept that conclusion; she was convinced the Cardassians were behind it.
Sitting on the bed, she mused over the sudden change to her life.
The change was so sudden that she had no time to say goodbye to her mother. She communicated her goodbye on the trip to the Zephyr. The sudden change had been a wind whirl, as humans say, why they call it that, she had never discovered, and she found it unimportant to ask. The fact was that several days ago, she was sitting at the Academy Cafeteria in San Francisco waiting for the results of her final exams, and today she was a midshipman in Starfleet on a Federation starship. She had achieved her first goal.
Now, Ava thought she had regained a sense of purpose as a productive member of society. The doorbell chimed, interrupting her thoughts. She went to the door and opened it.
