Sebastian sat looking at the readouts of the scan of Icarus III to see if he could figure out this mystery. Being a Scientist, he started applying the Scientific Method to the mystery. The steps of the scientific method were pretty straightforward. One Ask a Question: Observe something and form a question about it. Two, do Background Research: Gather information on the topic to understand what is already known. Three, form a Hypothesis: Create a testable, educated guess or prediction. Four, test the Hypothesis: Design and conduct an experiment to test your hypothesis. Five, analyze the Data: Examine the results from your experiment to see if they support your hypothesis. Six, draw a Conclusion: Decide whether your hypothesis was correct based on the data you collected., Seven, communicate Results: Share your findings with others, often through reports or presentations.
So Sebastian started, step one, We have an old derelict ship with twelve cryo-pods containing survivors of a doomed civilization Step two, there is a nearby planet that sustained life but fell due to some ecological collapse that occurred approximately 98,000 years ago, but what caused the environmental collapse, a nuclear war, climate change, or just a naturally occurring incident, a coronal mass ejections (CMEs) Step three the people of Icarus III discovered that their civilization was going to be destroyed, so option one for them would be to evacuate their planet, so they send out a ship to find and set up a colony, or option two move their civilization underground, or ideally to ensure survival would be to do both. Step four has been partially done by the Zephry’s scans of the planet, so the crew had to either board the ship or beam an Away Team to Icarus III. Still, ideally, the best option would be to do both. Step five would require them to send Away's team to the ship and the planet and investigate. Step six was a bit hard to answer; the conclusion could be any number of possibilities, but which one fit the circumstances?
Then it occurred to Sebastian: what if, the ship and Icarus III aren’t related? What if the ship's origins are several hundred light-years away? What if the ship just happened to be found near Icarus III by pure coincidence?
Think Sebastian, think.
Sebastian was eager to know more and was hoping that the Captain would send Away Teams, and he wanted to be on one.
