Robin smiled and even leant back in her chair.
"Never. Actually I'm glad to hear it. And I'm not going to hit you with any cheerful platitudes or any of that nonsense. I really am glad you've worked it out with Calleja, however much you actually did. Will you at least try and work it out with Aeryn, too? Maybe not immediately, but soon?"
"And thanks,” she added. “I did worry that I was giving you too much, pushing you. Physically you'd recovered, but mentally? I wasn't sure. And I was being a bit mercenary about it, too. I needed someone I could count on in that position. You've stepped up." She paused. "And I needed that. It's taken some pressure off of me."
Beka’s smile was more genuine this time.
“Thanks. That means a lot, especially now,” she admitted. “I just… I know what to do when there’s a casualty in front of me. That part almost comes easy. And the rest is starting to fall into place too. I know I’m not as… polished, to borrow someone else’s phrase, as most of the officers around here. But I’m getting there. When I’m not shooting myself in the foot, anyway.”
She grinned impishly.
“And I absolutely will try and fix things with Aeryn. We may not have been right as a couple but she’s an amazing person.” Sydesh’s green eyes turned wistful. “I’ll find the right moment once all this is over.”
[Nalar to Mayfair. The Science officer you requested is here.]
"Understood. I'll be right out." Robin made eye contact with Beka and held it. "Promise me you'll come to me and talk if you need anything? You always know where to find me."
“You got it,” Beka replied, rising from her chair with a nod.
As the CMO went to work, the redheaded doctor slipped past the assembled officers. She hadn’t got more than 10 yards before one of the nurses intercepted her and thrust a PADD in her hand.
Sydesh smiled to herself before tuning back into the stream of information.
