Robin slowly sipped her coffee as her best friend told her tail.
Well that explains... everything.
Her face was neutral. She merely listened.
“So when it comes to who causes all my problems right now, it’s absolutely me,” Beka added with a faint smile. “You’re some way down the list. Actually giving me some responsibility to earn my keep around here is really, really welcome. I’m not just drama and chaos, I can actually do good shit too.”
The roguish grin on Beka’s face was back for a moment.
“Sorry you asked yet?” she asked.
The CMO returned her smile and leaned back in her chair a little. "Never. Actually I'm glad to hear it. And I'm not going to hit you with any cheerful platitudes or any of that nonsense. I really am glad you've worked it out with Calleja, however much you actually did. Will you at least try and work it out with Aeryn, too? Maybe not immediately, but soon?"
The nurse knew she was guilty of living vicariously through others, at least a bit. It was perhaps a way of distracting herself from her nonexistent love life. She'd been happy for her best friend and had been shocked at the sudden collapse of their relationship. Her Southern-bred instinct to leave people alone conflicted with her need to see her friends be happy. Beka needed a win.
"And thanks. I did worry that I was giving you too much, pushing you. Physically you'd recovered, but mentally? I wasn't sure. And I was being a bit mercenary about it, too. I needed someone I could count on in that position. You've stepped up." She paused. "And I needed that. It's taken some pressure off of me."
[Nalar to Mayfair. The Science officer you requested is here.]
She tapped her badge. "Understood. I'll be right out." She locked her gemstone eyes on her friend as she stood up. "Promise me you'll come to me and talk if you need anything? You always know where to find me."
After Beka's reply she stepped outside. She recognized the officer in blue, since at this point she knew virtually everyone on board or at least had seen them. "Lieutenant Maguire? Thanks for coming down. I'm not sure how much you'd be able to find, but we've been going over the genetic samples Lieutenant Calleja provided. I'm not sure if there's anything further to be found in them, but could you coordinate with our Doctor Miller and see if you can determine anything else that might be useful? Specifically I'd like to know about the genetic enhancements done to the Cardassians and Vorta... slaves." the last word was said with an obvious disgust. "The computer found that they'd been modified in a minor way to enhance healthiness. I'm trying to figure out why anyone would bother, so whatever you can find, even if it's a small clue, would be helpful."
She tapped her combadge. "Mayfair to Doctor Miller. Please work with Lieutenant Maguire from science and do a deep dive into those samples." She closed the connection.
The goth-girl Doctor showed up a few moments later. "Greetings. Come into my lair," she said with an overly dramatic fake Transylvanian accent. Robin sighed.
"Doctor? Don't mess with the science officers. I need them to keep talking to us."
