"It wasn't an issue. Not really. I honestly didn't know him very well. But I did end up having to go through darkened tunnels on a Kazon station in the Delta Quadrant with him, during the Pathfinder Expedition, and he ended up with a gun pointed at him. I managed to play at being intimidating long enough for the Kazon to drop his weapon. I honestly think Nathan didn't know I was an Augment at the time. Whatever happened with the two traitor Augments on the Getty, I think it messed him up psychologically. Probably would most people. It was ugly. So it's probably just me being hypersensitive. I can tell you that he was best friends with Elias, though I don't know much more than that. They were pretty tight." Robin paused. "The Captain trusts him, and honestly that's good enough for me. She takes a while to trust anyone, and you have to earn it."
Mara had plenty of time to take in that answer as the Bridge started to chase up the investigation into what they’d come across on the qoH. She watched the CMO closely for a second or two, then decided she was being told the truth and tuned into the conversation.
"Whoa." Robin turned the monitor so Mara could see. "Not sure about this Elak Srim, but Damar was in charge of the Cardassians under the Dominion after Gul Dukat lost power, and he turned rebel before dying in the liberation of Cardassia Prime. Broca was the puppet who took over after he rebelled, and he was killed by the Jem'Hadar. Those four Vorta are all well-known to the Federation. Someone's got quite a collection of important Dominion War era clones. Gimme a sec, I need to let the Captain know."
The Amazonian Security Chief shrugged her shoulders. She’d studied the Dominon War. It was required reading and some of the tactics used on both sides still coloured how Calleja organised her teams. Maybe at one point in her life she had been as familiar as Mayfair was on the names of the individual Vorta - probably to pass a test - but that was a long way in the past now for an unaugmented mind.
"This just got a lot more interesting."
“Yeah, it’s that alright,” Mara replied. “Who the hell wants to bring back Vorta? Gives me so many questions I ain’t got answers to. Main one for me. Did these Klingons stumble onto some kinda… I don’t know, some kinda time capsule with Dominion War era cloning facilities and these guys ready to go? Or is this an actual example of the Dominion pushin’ back in? ‘Cause the first one don’t worry me that much. Klingons we can beat. I just did. But Dominion comin’ in with Jem’Hadar and Founders and all that? That is scary.”
She shrugged again.
“Always reckoned I could take a Jem’Hadar one on one. But you never get those fuckers one on one. You get a ship full o’ them. And that’s not a fight I ever wanna get into.”
Calleja straightened up in the chair.
“Anyway. By the sounds of that, I need to let you get crackin’. There’s gonna be more questions ‘bout what we’re dealin’ with. Gonna bet you the Cap’n has better theories than time capsule,” she added with a wry smile as she stood up. “Plus I better go see if we got anythin’ else to fight yet. I got a horrible feelin’ I’m not done with the killin’ yet today.”
