Robin was impressed by Hallowette's tolerance for the spicy tacos. Of course some species had greater tolerances for capsaicin than others, and Bajoran food was notoriously spicy. She resolved to look up tolerances later, more out of curiosity than anything else. Others helped themselves to the food, with none of the humans trying the tacos... which was fine. The nurse had just wanted to get a variety for people. The conversation continued, going from language to culture to religion. Hallowette was settling in nicely after a short time, and didn't seem to be worried at what was amounting to a senior staff party.
"How about you guys? Robin? Lucy? Anything interesting or unique about your cultures that you don't mind sharing?"
Lucy explained hers, which was North American but from the west coast, a far cry from Robin's upbringing. She gnawed on a wing, dipping it in some ranch dressing.
"Well, my home colony came from North America in the 22nd century, the Appalachians. It was extremely conservative and religious, with all the good and bad that comes with that." To anyone familiar with Earth the nurse's accent was apparent, a bit of a Southern drawl, not strong but noticeable. "Neighborly and helpful. The people there would do anything to help each other out. Mostly." Her voice had its usual cheerful tone, but a note of bitterness crept in that she couldn't hide. "But also insular, and close-minded. Judgmental."
It wasn't that she hated Iota Tau. It had just seemed like a prison, a place she'd never escape and far too small for her. Her family had expected her to marry some rancher and make babies while her mind craved every bit of knowledge it could absorb and her soul longed to explore. There was nothing to see, nothing to do, nothing to learn there. And the people there didn't like anyone who seemed too different, and a purple-haired Augment fit that bill.
"I've kept my faith, Presbyterian Christian, unlike a lot of modern humans. Religious belief is still common on my homeworld. I find a lot of comfort in it."
Robin was a regular visitor to the shrine that was located on Deck 6. She stopped in at least once a week to pray and had a tradition of lighting a candle there for any crew member who died. She'd lit far too many candles.
"As for languages, I can also speak French, Spanish, Japanese, Latin, Bolian, and some Denobulan."
She realized she was sounding like she was bragging. Most of those had come from a sudden desire to pick this or that language up, such as when she'd learned Japanese before spending a summer there during her Academy days. Bolian and Denobulan had been learned from her Academy roommates who she'd pestered to teach her. Latin had been so she could understand medical terminology. Like music, it was just what her brain did. Lucy sounded like she shared the same interest. The nurse wondered if she should talk to the science officer about taking some holo-classes, maybe picking up another language. It would be nice to have someone to study with.
