The initial whirlwind of arrivals and assignments had settled into a tense, focused energy on the Zephyr's bridge. Department heads were at their stations, and the ship was beginning to feel less like a collection of strangers and more like a Starfleet crew, however green. Ameen allowed himself a moment to process the reports that had come in. His attention turned to the medical officer who had just formally reported.
"Doctor O’Fee," Ameen said, his voice conveying professional welcome. "Glad to have you officially on board as Chief Medical Officer. Please confirm your department's readiness for immediate departure and report any critical concerns."
A Lieutenant for CMO. Solid. One less major gap in our capabilities. I like the Irish accent too...
He mentally acknowledged the positive updates from his other new department heads.
Amila reported Science ready. All business, focused, her gaze direct and professional when she made her report, even if she avoided my eye earlier. Good. That's exactly what this bridge, and this situation, requires of both of us. Her competence is undeniable...
That faint, almost imperceptible smile he'd allowed himself when she first arrived was a memory now, filed away under 'to be addressed later.'
Ensign Powl also reported Tactical green and has already shown initiative by assigning Lieutenant Krandall to the helm.
Stepping up well beyond his rank. That’s promising...
He also recalled Lieutenant Gath's earlier, thorough report on securing the ship.
Security is tight, thanks to Gath's efficiency...
With those departments online, he focused on the remaining pieces.
"Lieutenant Krandall, Helm," Ameen addressed the new helmsman. "What is your status? Are we prepared for undocking procedures and departure?"
Engineering was the next critical point. Commander Keir 77 was down in the ship's guts. Ameen tapped his combadge.
"Ameen to Commander Keir." He waited a beat for the channel to connect. "Status report from Engineering, please. Are primary systems, main power, and the warp drive green for immediate departure to Trill? What's your assessment of our ability to maintain Warp Nine?"
Trust Keir's judgment implicitly. S/he won't sugarcoat it...
Then, the crucial matter of personnel. He turned to his Security Chief.
"Lieutenant Gath," Ameen stated, "your teams have secured the ECPs. Cross-referencing your entry logs with the master crew manifest provided by Starfleet, can you confirm that all 120 assigned personnel are now accounted for aboard the Zephyr?"
Ameen let his gaze sweep the bridge.
The travel time considerations for Trill were critical, he mused again, recalling the briefing. Forty hours at high warp, five days otherwise. Given the urgency implied by Fleet Captain Vakir, we don't have the luxury of a leisurely cruise...
"Our course to Trill will be maintained at Warp Factor Nine," he stated clearly, for the benefit of all bridge crew. "That's maximum sustainable for this class. We need to make best speed, but we will do so with careful monitoring of all systems. This old girl has a new heart in her crew, but we respect her age."
Settled in the command chair, he now awaited these final crucial confirmations.
"Medical, Helm, Engineering, and Lieutenant Gath with the final crew accountability – report your status. We depart the moment all departments are green and all hands are confirmed aboard."
The clock is ticking...
