Mika was aware that the situation was already a mess, but she was still a bit taken aback by the growing irritation on the Captain’s face. Being so close, it suddenly felt more real to her than it had from her spot among the other crew members on the Bridge. This certainly wasn’t how her proverbial first day on the job was meant to unfold.
She wasn’t too surprised when the Captain pulled out a cigarette and started smoking on the Bridge. If it weren't for their earlier meeting, it might have seemed unprofessional to her. From what she had learned during that meeting and in the days since, the Captain felt like a square peg struggling to fit into a round hole. Not that Mika thought that was a bad thing—there was always some expectation of conformity, but they weren’t robots, after all.
I’m also getting the feeling this particular Cardassian vessel is bad news. Especially with how frantically focused that tactical officer seems to be. I should learn people’s names around here, shouldn’t I?
Mika hadn’t been particularly thrilled about the Aeroshuttle mission, which was now off the table, and she felt a bit lost regarding her role going forward. If the full resources of the Yeager were being mobilized, it made sense that Qi would be more suited for the task. That was a realistic conclusion for a junior officer like herself. She hadn’t yet carved out her own space on the ship, and frankly, she would prefer someone with more experience keeping an eye on things. But maybe two heads were better than one in this case? Regardless, time was ticking down to the start of the race.
