Amila let out a delighted yelp during their short fall from the swim platform into the water. The water was perfect. She’d missed the salty taste of the ocean on her lips and the freedom she felt when she moved through the water of something so vast. The fact that those sensations could be so closely simulated on a holodeck was still astonishing to her. Though it wasn’t the feel of the ocean on her skin or the beautiful starlit sky that was making this night so perfect.
It was him.
She noticed the little things like how his hair still looked full despite the fact that they were soaked. And how the starlight caught that thing in his eyes that she had always been attracted to - the spark, the kindness. But, tonight there was something more there too. She hoped she wasn’t imagining it.
She didn’t look away as his eyes found hers in the darkness of the moonless night. They were close to one another in the water, close enough that she could feel the vibrations in his voice when he spoke.
“Well, Lieutenant Ra’an. Your thoughts on ‘undeveloped rocks’ with excellent water features… and even better company?”
Amila used one hand to gently splash him, careful not to hit his eyes. “You’re gonna have to stop calling me that tonight if you want a second date.” Her voice was teasing and light, just before she disappeared underwater.
She moved effortlessly, swimming peacefully toward the shore of the cove where they had dropped anchor, stopping after a few seconds to resurface. She could see the back of Ameen’s head, but waited before calling out to see if he would be able to find her in the darkness. Amila held back a laugh as she treaded water silently, waiting to be found in her impromptu game of hide-and-seek.
