Despite her assurances that Beka wasn't as bad as Mara was making her out to be, Mara wasn't convinced as she shed more disparaging comments about her girlfriend. She might be crass regarding Beka, but Aeryn was aware of just how deep the barrier was between Beka and her friend, realising that it might never be cordial if she was ever in the same room as them, and how she would be better off keeping them as far apart as she was able to, easier said than done especially on a ship like Artemis. Before it could get any more awkward, Mara stopped herself and apologised, giving some context as to her reasons for disliking Beka. Aeryn understood, of course, where it all had stemmed from, and she doubted that Beka would have held back if she had been present.
Mara then suggested a change of topic, something Aeryn appreciated not only for herself, but also for Hally, who had borne witness to this whole exchange, and judging by the way the hybrid was avoiding eye contact, it probably hadn't been what she had expected. So she acknowledged her new friend with a reassuring look before Hally responded to Mara, even if it caused her cheeks to redden slightly. Of course, she wouldn't be human if she didn't feel somewhat guilty about how they might have made Hally feel. However, Aeryn was hopeful that the conversation could be salvaged.
For this part, Aeryn chose to listen at least for the moment while she sipped her lemonade, allowing the science chief to put her emotions in check.
