AQ/E01-Away Missions
Jez knew that she was right they needed to use every advantage they had to solve this mystery, Commanders Kurasa and Velaul were assuming that they would be caught using their gifts, or that the locals would know that they had been telepathically scanned; especially considering their extensive use of implants. In all likelihood a telepathic scan would be one of probably a dozen or more signals.

Jez wasn’t sure what to say, she was beyond conflicted. She knew she was right in her opinion. Jez followed them towards the turbolift. Jez then looked back over her shoulder to see if anyone appeared relieved or more relaxed knowing that the Aquila crew was leaving. Jez thought about it,  chances were excellent that the Riani was probably aware that the Federation had telepathic species and prepared for interactions with said species.

Jez just felt that they were somehow heading into a trap. Maybe it was her imagination, but she didn’t think so. Maybe because Jez grew up in the field with her parents, exploring ancient temples and tombs where heightened awareness was necessary, as many of these ancient tombs and temples had boobie traps to prevent intruders. Jez found this mission to be very overwhelming, thus far.

Jez, relax, you're getting distracted. Distractions cause one to make mistakes.

Jez double checked her personal weapons, She checked her hair, her Kanzashi was secure. The concealed Katana was secure in her boot. Her Type I phaser snug in the small of her back. She knew that her personal weapon might be overkill, but she felt it was necessary.

Jez neared closer to Commander Velaul, as she would be the most likely target should someone figure out who she is and what she represents.

As Reese approached the bar, he noticed that it was manned by another automaton. As its head turned toward Reese, the digital face projected on its screen shifted from a pale-skinned Riani with dark narrow eyes to the familiar one that had greeted him at reception. It seemed that the hotel tailored a specific persona for each guest. She listened patiently as Reese gave his order.

“Certainly, our specialty is called a short circuit. It’s quite popular with visitors from off-planet. I’ll bring a round up to your suite once you’re settled.” The automaton laid out a set of glasses and began to mix ingredients.

The team overheard pieces of a few different conversations as they walked toward the elevator.  One sharply-dressed Riani was reciting a children’s story from memory into their personal communicator. Another was flirting quite aggressively with someone who seemed more interested in reading something on their padd.

Eventually, something interesting caught their ear. An earnest-looking businessman was attempting to convince a skeptical Ferengi that, under President Khushku, the Tanndi nation had emerged as a stabilizing force on Riani. In ten years, he insisted, the planet would become a galactic trading hub.

“Spare me,” the Ferengi replied, narrowing his eyes. “I’ve done my research. The crime families here are too afraid to let anyone else move in on their turf. I’ve heard that the Xha family even has some operatives working for the government.”

"Well, I don’t think that’s—" the Riani replied, suddenly quite pale in the face. He shifted uncomfortably in his seat.

Jez couldn’t help but overhear a very interesting conversation between a local businessman and a Ferengi .The Riani was an earnest-looking businessman, he was was attempting to convince a skeptical Ferengi that, under President Khushku, the Tanndi nation had emerged as a stabilizing force on Riani. In ten years, he insisted, the planet would become a galactic trading hub.

Now things were starting to make more sense, this wasn’t a civil war, but a mob war, two criminal organizations bidding for power to control a planet. That probably meant the Orion Syndicate wasn’t far behind

Jez remembered Ferengi Rules of Acquisition Number Thirty-Four: War is good for business and Number Thirty-Five Peace is good for business, but the question was which path would the Riani follow, War or Peace.

Jez looked at the other members of the Away Team to see their reaction to the conversation.

Satisfied that the drinks were going up to the suite, Reese decided to rejoin the group. He heard a lot of chatter along the way not making it look like he was paying attention, there were a few things that he had observed but kept on going. The Commander had made herself clear that she wanted him to go there, and return as soon as the task was done.

It was complete leaving only one more thing to do. "The drinks are going to be delivered to the room." He reported before hitting the button for the elevator, the next action he did was turn his back to the elevator because he knew what was going to happen next. The First Officer was going to go in first with Talion, then Kurasa leaving him and Jez going in last. He was the lowest on that totem pole as an enlisted. As he waited for the elevator to get there, he continued to observe what was going on around him.

Now that the team was together again, they went onto the elevator. The meeting had to take place because they had the answers they need, if there was some sort of peaceful solution to be had it was going to start there. Chances were high that they would want to keep what they have the way they have it, and if Beno was to provide an opportunity to do so they would take it. What was going on in the planets population, it really wasn't Federation business unless they made it that way.

Once the lift doors opened, Beno would assume a certain poker face. One that wasn't hostile, but friendly. They were guests in a different environment, and certain traditions had to be followed.

The elevator doors slid closed as the away team stepped inside. Scanning the key padd in Velaul’s hand, a mechanism sprang to life and the platform began to raise. The wall facing the atrium was transparent from the inside, showcasing an impressive view as the lobby shrank into a haze of dim light and holographic glitter.

After a short journey, the elevator eased itself to a halt. Another pair of doors slid open to reveal a luxurious penthouse suite. The room was bathed in a rich orange light that lent more color than luminance. A large window on the room’s back wall showcased the skyline of Saule’s commercial district, adorned with neon lights and video advertisements.

There was plenty of room for the away team to spread out as they waited for their host to arrive. The expansive suite included a separate office and a miniature replicator. Clues about the identify of their host, however, were sparse. If their mysterious contact had been to the room before, they hadn’t left anything behind.

The party waited for several minutes, the settling quiet interrupted by an automaton carrying a tray of neon green cocktails. The drinks smelled strongly of citrus and left a tingling sensation on the lips.

Finally, the penthouse doors slid open again to reveal the stern, chrome-jawed face of General Alukh. He looked at each member of the party with the practiced eye of a tactician, then nodded and stomped inside.

“Thank you all for coming,” he said. His voice reverberated with a mechanical echo. He walked over to the replicator and made himself a hot drink that smelled like coffee.

“Ambassador Saida Gebrezghi is being held in a detention center near Tanndi’s industrial district. She’s alive, and her injuries are being treated by our best doctors. Unfortunately, the pilot who was with her did not survive the crash.

“Earlier this week, an unknown alien spacecraft entered our space. According to official reports, it failed to respond to hails and it was shot down over the Tanndi wasteland. However, I’m afraid that this tragedy seems convenient, considering the desire of the Xha crime family to cut off contact with outworlders. I strongly suspect foul play.

“I swore an oath to President Khushku, but I recognize that she’s now faced with an impossible conundrum. She faces down the threat of war with other Riani nations, and now with the Federation as well. I’ve kept close tabs on Jonas’s career since he arrived on Riani, and I believe in his vision for Riani. Now I’m asking you to help me find a solution that brings us closer to peace."

The General took a long sip from his drink, waiting for someone else to speak.

Jez felt uneasy as the Turbo lift carried them upwards, she felt as if they were heading into a trap, a private Penthouse. A gilded cage is still a cage and a cage is meat to trap, thought Jez. Suddenly the lift stopped and the door parted to reveal a lavish Penthouse , the view of Saule’s commercial district, adorned with brilliant neon lights of various colors and shapes and video advertisements was very impressive, if not a bit annoying. After all, with an expensive Penthouse view one expects a peaceful relaxing vista if nothing else.

Jez didn't know what to think was this Penthouse meant to impress or to intimidate them. On one level it was impressive, such grandeur and opulence could convey the message that whoever called this meeting was a civilized and wanted to protect their lifestyle and that war could end this lifestyle and they would do anything to protect it, or that they are used to the power and influence that gets them such a place? Jez never understood greed, in this day and age when technology could provide for everyone, why do people want more than what they need to survive; it was truly a mystery to her why people did such things.

The Penthouse didn’t show any sign of being occupied, or had been lived in. As she looked around and deep in observation mode, a voice pulled her back to the here and now, “Thank you all for coming,” Jez looked up and saw the stern,chrome-jawed face of General Alukh. She wasn’t sure if his words of welcome were genuine or not. Jez normally could read a lot from one’s body language. But the General was playing it close to the vest.
Jez listened as the General continued “Ambassador Saida Gebrezghi is being held in a detention center near Tanndi’s industrial district. She’s alive, and her injuries are being treated by our best doctors. Unfortunately, the pilot who was with her did not survive the crash.

Jez wasn’t sure what to say and as she was a Junior Officer she really couldn’t say anything. Jez stood there watching and observing the General to see if any subtle twitch or movement that might indicate danger for the away team.

Beno was relieved that Sadia was still alive, but saddened that the pilot didn't. Those were the kind of conversations that Beno didn't enjoy, and did her best to honor their memory. Peace was always the preferred path over war, too many innocents die in the process.

"Thank you for Hosting us General." Beno started with a friendly tone. "Peace is always the best path for all involved, especially when acts of violence is kept to a minimum." The act of violence happened and there was no way to go back and stop it. "We also have to admit that one way or another there could have been the inability to communicate, this would make it difficult to determine intent." The argument could be made that it was in self defemse, and not an attempt to kill an Ambassador.

"The Federation had made it clear we have no intrest in going to war, the Federation is built on peace." There were a few thoughts that Beno had about the timing of everything, the shuttle being shot down and Jonas being shot. All of this was done with the changing of the diplomats.

"In order to properly broker a peace, as you are well aware we need to know who we are dealing with and common ground." Peace can inspire more peace. "Exploring common ground can be a good start, just to get people talking." The longer the talks, the easier it is for peace.

As before, the first thing Alex did was to scan the room. He half expected there to be some more sophisticated devices for recording or jamming signals. He wanted to know what they were and how he might need to counter them. He had no interest in the drinks and didn't trust what might be in them. The General sounded like every other experienced diplomat or highly placed military leader. He spun a plausible story that was not offered as fact, simply what would be their story, should it become debated. It was unfortunate that a life was lost in the process, but it was worth noting that the ship was not headed on a direct path to the port he would have expected them to attempt to land at.

Alex knew that the Federation couldn't allow their people to be used as bargaining chips in a local dispute. He was uncomfortable with trying to hold a diplomatic position in this event. This was something to be worked out by those designated for the political arena. He had to hold his opinions to himself for now, as his job right now was to try his best to support the FO and how she was going to attempt to carry out the orders of the CO and those above him. If it were up to Alex, he would extract their people politely if possible and by force if necessary. Naturally, you try one first, but you have to be prepared for the other. The fact that they were holding Ambassador Saida Gebrezghi and had not given the coordinates for her medical evacuation said that they intended to have conversations other than about her safe return and medical care.

It was difficult, but Alex maintained his poker face and let the FO do the talking. He was very attentively listening with his own ind for any stray thoughts from the General. he had been very specific to Mala about how they should not misbehave with their gifts, but he was certainly prepared to try his best to read every aspect of this man's actions and words. Talion presumed that this man had been briefed about Betazoids, but it was unlikely that he knew one was in the room with him. Although full Betazoid, he didn't have some of the telling physical traits. If anything, Alex looked more the part of a body guard than a Chief Science Officer with diplomatic upbringing.

== Tag for any GM input that Alex might pickup through stray thoughts or non-verbal communication. The implants might help hide certain traits, but there can be many tells. Also, any devices or jamming being done to their location. ==

Jez looked at Commander Tallion, she could tell just by looking at him his big beautiful brain was thinking at least a million thoughts a second. She had no doubt that he had something on his mind. Jez couldn’t help but think that Tallion and her were thinking the same thing, about using their abilities to read the Generals thoughts, but there was the possibility that the Riani’s couldn’t be read or had the ability to resist telepathic scans or both.

Jez looked at Commander Tallion and raised an eyebrow as if to say, ”Well, should you and I use our gifts on each other to see if we get a reaction from the General?’’ Jez waited to see if Commander Tallion would give her some visual confirmation, a head nod, or pretend to scratch the tip of his nose, as if to say spot on, or widen his eyes as if to say no bad idea.

Jez couldn’t help but think that the General was not being completely honest with them, that he was hiding something. Maybe the General was acting as a distraction, she couldn’t shake the feeling that his job was to keep the Away Team busy. Jez waited to see if Tallion would give her some kind of a sign as to what to do next. Jez felt uneasy as. Her mind went down a path of thinking, If the people who snatched the Ambassador knew the shuttle's flight plan, it stood to reason that perhaps they knew of the Aquila’s presence and of the Away Team. If one Federation hostage was good, several would be better especially if they were Star Fleet.

Alukh gave a firm nod as Velaul finished speaking.

“I’m glad that Jonas’s image of the Federation is more than a fairytale. The president still doesn’t believe in it, but she’s preoccupied with more pressing concerns. I wish we had more common ground, but I think my planet still has quite a way to go.”

The general took the steaming cup and gazed out the window for a moment, collecting his thoughts.

“The way I see it, you have two options:

“Option 1: you can send an extraction team to the detention center. Security is tight, but your team has the tactical and technological advantage by most measures. I think you would be justified in taking this route.

“Option 2: I can organize a meeting with President Khushku. Keep in mind that backing down to a threat from the Federation would severely weaken her position, and would likely open the door for this government to be replaced by something more violent and isolationist. I would recommend offering her something to help her save face.”

== For Talion/Jez ==

The general had the posture of a lifelong soldier, but the way that he shifted his balance seemed to indicate discomfort or guilt. Cybernetic noise was noticeable in his surface thoughts, though any augmentations didn’t appear to extend to his cognitive processes. Surface thoughts did not appear to indicate any deception or malice toward the away team.

== For Talion ==

During his sweep of the room, Talion identified a moderate jamming signal, more powerful than that used in the restaurant. There was also a low level forcefield reinforcing the window.

There were a lot of lessons that Velaul went through that would apply, the top of then made her walk to the nearest window to really look out  "General on the surface both of thoes options look equally as good, however below that they both fallapart. With that said neither one of like what is being said, change the conversation." There was a lot of ground to cover, and they were not going to achieve this by beating the dead horse.

"As you said if President Khushku backs down from a threat from the Federation, the opposite is also true. The official stance of the Federation is all we want is our Ambassador back, Jonas was shot because someone was scared of that Federation threat. Option three is this send a small team of Doctors to the ship to help save Jonas, the technology is something we haven't encountered before. We get Jonas back here to receive proper treatment, and recover in the one place he has the greatest chance of a full recovery." She turned from the window to look the General in the eye.

"Jonas has no diplomatic standing with the Federation, and if his greatest shot of survival is here we have no other choice but to leave him here. The President tells the Federation that at this time she needs to broker a peace agreement on this planet before considering a place in the Federation. This will place her in a position of strength, and make peace easier to achieve. Now that is just the appetizer, ready for the main course?" If they were going to broker any peace someone has to put the guns down, or this will never last.

Jez wasn’t sure what was happening beyond two groups that appear to love engaging in violence to achieve power and don't care who gets hurt in the process. Jez looked at the General with a look of disgust and pity, but then it occurred to her that maybe the General was an unwilling pawn in this whole mess. Maybe this was the only way the Legitimate Government of Riani, could ask for Federation’s help?

Jez stood watching Commander Velaul , the Commander was like a Chess Master studying the General and his words, anticipating his next move, in many ways the Commander reminded Jez of her Grandmother, a straight forward no nonsense kind of a woman, a powerful force of nature.

Jez suddenly recalled the saying, Si vis pacem, para bellum, ("If you want peace, prepare for war") , the well-known quote attributed to Roman author Vegetius. It suggests that a strong defense is the best way to deter aggression and maintain peace, emphasizing the importance of military strength for discouraging conflict. However, some argue that true peace requires more than just military might, highlighting the importance of justice, understanding, and peaceful intentions.

Jez, couldn’t help but think that maybe what was needed was a small break, “Excuse me Commander perhaps we should take a small break, you know get something to eat and come back to this from a fresh perspective?” Said Jez, hoping that the Commander would pick up on the hidden meaning in Jez’s words, suggesting that the Away Team should talk in private and confer with the Captain and see what he has to say.

“Excuse me, Commander,” Jez said, her tone measured yet firm. “Perhaps we should consider taking a brief recess—something to eat, a moment to recalibrate. A fresh perspective might serve us well.”

Beno paused, regarding her colleague. Jez was right. It wasn’t unusual for Beno to become so focused on progress that she overlooked the necessity of reflection. “My associate speaks wisely,” Beno continued. “We also have updates that must be transmitted to our respective command structures.” It was protocol, but more than that—it was essential. Both people understood the implications of every development. The President was still operating under the assumption that the Federation posed an immediate threat, though recent intelligence suggested otherwise.

Crucially, the Captain needed confirmation that the Ambassador was alive and in stable condition. That alone could reframe the entire situation and bring them closer to a diplomatic resolution. Any use of force at this juncture would not only compromise that objective but risk portraying the Federation as the aggressor. That perception would be detrimental. If Beno could present the new intelligence first—clearly, credibly—it would place her, and their delegation, in a position of strength.

“There is one more matter,” Beno said, turning toward Reese. She accepted the case he had carried since their arrival and opened it with deliberate care. Inside rested a bottle of fifty-year-old Scotch.

“I brought a tribute,” she said, her voice calm and respectful. “A token of friendship and mutual respect. I recognize that true diplomacy begins with gestures, not demands.” The offering was strategic, yes—but it was also sincere. It underscored her intent to facilitate peace on the planet, even if integration into the Federation would not occur immediately. That step could come in time, and if it did, it would be on more solid, equitable terms. The pause would also allow Beno the opportunity to confer with her team. Their insight would be invaluable. She was too enmeshed in the situation—too close to see every angle. And in diplomacy, clarity was everything.

The general’s granite features were hardly capable of surprise, but he seemed to soften as Velaul joined him at the window. He was much taller than she was, and his rigid posture made it such that he had to look down his nose to meet her gaze.

“So Jonas has been shot,” he whispered. “Things have really gone to shit. Most of our best doctors have never seen a human before. I imagine he’s in better hands with your team, but I’ll make sure that they get the schematics for his implant. Trust me when I say that the bastard who did this will be dealt with.”

The general eyed the bottle of scotch with a glint of curiosity and greed, but ultimately raised his hand in refusal.

“I appreciate the offer, but I’m here in an unofficial capacity. You should save that gesture for President Khushku if you choose to meet with her. By the way, for my sake as well as yours, she shouldn’t know that this conversation happened.”

Seeing that the away team needed some time to discuss amongst themselves, Alukh excused himself to a small balcony and watched the city for a while.

Beno knew there were times that the left hand didn't always need to know what the right hand was doing. "What conversation?" Was the only thing that she could say before he left for the balcony.

There was some privacy for her to talk to her people, there were a few things they needed to go over. "We have a couple of minutes before I need to make a report for the Captain, here is what we do know. The Ambassador is alive and well, being detained but still alive. I have elected to meet with the President fully aware of the risk to me, it is one I am willing to take. Negotiations are going to be anything but easy, and if done right we can walk out of this keeping the Federations hands clean. I need to know any insights you might have, or even concerns that you might have noticed that I might not have." She valued their insight, as she was too close too it there were angles that she would have missed.

Jez couldn’t help but notice this could work to their advantage, as females were more practical than males. Granted that’s not an idea that's set in stone, but in most cases males often are less thoughtful and more aggressive.

Jez lowered her voice, so the General didn’t overhear, “Commander the way I see it, this may work to our advantage, with the President being a woman it stands to reason that she is more reasonable, and less obstinate than a man, unless she is one of those women who tries to prove she can compete with the men. Might I suggest we invite the President on board for a reception, to let her see that we are truly peaceful and only want good relationships with.” Stated Jez, her tone warm but actual.

Jez ,then realized what she just said, may have hurt the feelings of the men of the away team.”Sorry Guys.” Her tone, a little sheepish.

Alex joined the ladies and picked up on what Jez said. He was carrying a drink, but not drinking it. His body language softened a bit. When he spoke, it came out more as a casual conversation than he had displayed to this point on the planet.

"What you say has a fair basis in history, but we can't presume that. The problem with your suggestion is only that we would want to give the feeling of home field advantage to her and not us. For us to have her come to the ship would appear to give us all the power. If we want to put her at ease and give a show of faith, we would need to be comfortable giving her that advantage and go to her under her terms. If she does come to the ship, it should seem like it is her idea. You see?"

He grinned at her and tilted his head, "Your idea isn't bad, but there are better approaches to use when the diplomatic game is on this level. You keep thinking about it though. I want you to continue to consider options. You never know when someone might have an idea that others have not considered and those kinds of thoughts can sometimes give an edge in a tough situation. Nobody was ever remembered in history for thinking just like everyone else. Just be careful and be sure to tell one of us what your ideas are before jumping off a cliff with something, all right?"

Alex looked to the FO to see how she felt about his words. He was hoping that him stepping in might take some of the heat off of her right now. her hands were quite full with what she was trying to do with the mission. He wanted to do his best to support her in that and let her stay focused on whatever plan she had in hand.

Jez couldn’t help but smile at Commander Tallion's oversimplification of the matter, he couldn’t help it he was a man after all. Not that she would ever say that to him, as she respected the Commander, he was like an older brother, or even a father figure to her. However, what she had to say couldn’t be helped.

Jez looked at Commander Tallion “Excuse me Commander, with all due respect you have missed my point completely, Confucius states: "The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. When in a state of security he does not forget the possibility of ruin. When all is orderly, he does not forget that disorder may come. Thus his person is not endangered, and his States and all their clans are preserved". Said Jez.

“ Commander this suggests that a truly wise individual always considers the potential for insecurity, even in their most familiar and seemingly safe spaces, and plans accordingly. This perspective applies not only to personal well-being but also to the safety and stability of a state and its people. In other words maybe the President isn;t free to talk in her own office, there could be too many people working against the best interests of her Government, thus by inviting her aboard our ship, she may be free to discuss things more openly, away from so many prying eyes and ears. She just might be waiting for an invitation.” Added Jez.

Jez then turned to Commander Velaul. “Commander, what if someone is monitoring the President's communication, and she is unable to safely make a request for a meeting and is hoping that we reach out to her, that way she can save face?” Said Jez, her tone factual. “Oh and Commander Historically, just about every coup has been by the Military or government elites, so with that in mind can we really trust the General?” Added Jez so the Commander could mull it over.

Alex smiled and nodded, "That is why it should SEEM like it is her idea. The trick is in letting her feel welcome and then letting her handle her people while giving the appearance of being in control. A great deal of political business is about how things appear to the masses. Those who are part of the actual arena know full well what's going on. On the subject of trusting people, I believe in questioning everything and trusting sparingly. The General has not exactly done anything for us to trust him, but he is trying to make a gesture. He also knows that it is information we already had, other than the status on the pilot and Ambassador. We knew their location already."

He considered the drink in his hand, almost took a sip, but then decided it was better not to before adding, "Oh, and I prefer not to quote Confucius on political or military matters. I tend to go with Sun Tzu. However, be wary of those who hold too tightly to the writings of Miyamoto Musashi."

Jez smiled as it seemed that Commander Tallion wanted to play some sort of Battle of quotes, she liked that Commander Talion's one flaw in his reasoning was he was wrong about wanting the President to think the idea of a reception was her idea, because as Sun Tzu said, try to manipulate the battlefield to your advantage, forcing the enemy into unfavorable positions. So it would stand to reason that the Federation or in this case Star Fleet should control the narrative, to control what the people of this world thought and saw of the Federation. One might call it taking the High Road, but either way.

“Commander Tallion you may be right but I think if you take into consideration what Sun Tzu said, about manipulating the battlefield to your advantage, forcing the enemy into an unfavorable position, then my idea makes perfect sense. Think about it , If there are unfriendly elements in the President's government and she is aware of them, she would act indigent to the idea of us asking her to a reception, I can hear her now, “The gall of these Federation rabble-rousers inviting me to a reception. I’ll go but they won’t convince me that their intentions are noble and beneficial to our world.” That way anyone in her cabinet that may be plotting against her would think that she has no intentions of cooperating and thus let their guard down. In all likelihood she wants a face to face meeting with us, but can’t openly ask, because in the eyes of her enemy she would appear weak, not to mention they may be monitoring her communication, she may be a prisoner. The enemies may need her in place long enough to bolster their forces and have a coup and once she serves her purpose, they kill her. Didn't Sun Tzu say, "All warfare is based on deception."

Jez then looked at Commander Velaul. Commander, I’m sure that you're aware that on Earth In the 1991there was a coup in the Soviet Union, the Soviet coup attempted by, Communist hardliners detained President Mikhail Gorbachev but intended to restore his authority under certain conditions, suggesting a delayed power shift rather than an immediate ousting.

Beno wore a subtle grin as she listened to the conversation, taking a brief mental breather. Both sides made valid points, and the quotes were sharp — well-chosen, even inspiring. She had a few of her own to contribute, starting with the first one she ever learned when she stepped into the world of science.

"If we're pulling out the big guns of philosophy," Beno began, "then I start with this: 'Truth isn't what you want it to be; it is what it is. You must bend to its power or live a lie.'" She let the weight of the words hang in the air for a moment. "The truth is, I always assume someone is watching and listening. It keeps my path straight."

She knew that as she rose through the ranks, more eyes were on her — for better or worse. And how she acted under that pressure defined everything. She picked up one of the drinks on the table and took a small sip. It was sweet, too sweet for her taste — she preferred something with more bite.

"Don’t forget," she added, glancing between them, "Sun Tzu also said: 'The greatest victory is that which requires no battle.'" Her voice carried a firm resolve. "I’d prefer we avoid a fight if we can. War is worse than Hell — because in war, innocent people do go there."

Then, almost softly, she said, "All the darkness in the world cannot extinguish the light of a single candle." It had been a long time since she'd used philosophy in conversation. It simply didn’t come up much anymore.
She tapped her combadge.

[Commander Velaul to Captain Brooks — I have some updates for you.] She waited for the green light before continuing.
[I have reason to believe the shuttle was not shot down in an offensive move against the Federation. It was a defensive reaction — likely against an unknown shuttle that failed to communicate its intent. Her tone held cautious conviction — the theory made sense, but they still needed hard evidence. [Ambassador Saida Gebrezghi is alive and currently being treated by doctors in a detention center near the Tanndi industrial district.]

Then came the coded message, wrapped in an old Earth reference no one on this planet was likely to catch:
[I’ve got a feeling that to root out the real problem, we’re going to have to take it to the mattresses. That should lead us to the heart of the breakdown… or wherever the comms blockage began.] She waited for a response from the Captain while observing her environment.

There was a short pause from Commander Velaul's first comm before the Captains voice came over her commbadge.

[Captain Brooks to Commander Velaul, go ahead number one.]

[Yes, well we are having a request here from a scientist on the planet to help them clear up containment dilithium and as we know this isn't a one government world. I'm not convinced in giving anyone power over another. Keep on investigating and keep us informed. Any sniff of danger I want you to beam everyone out and we will work this another way. Brooks out.]

Hearing the news from the Captain only made Beno think harder. They had a lot of information now—enough to start forming a bigger picture. Saying the problem out loud might even make it clearer.

"Jonas has been here ten years without incident. The Federation sends someone to replace him, and suddenly her shuttle gets shot down, her tech looted. Our diplomat is now being treated by doctors unfamiliar with her physiology. Mobsters have blocked off-world communications. That means they’ve got influence in more than one area." Beno wasn’t speaking to anyone in particular—just voicing her thoughts for anyone who might be listening.
"Then Jonas gets himself shot while we’re walking him home—to make sure he gets there safe. The irony isn’t lost on me." She gave a short laugh. It sounded more ridiculous said aloud than it had in her head.

"And now the people who took Saida are asking for our help with the tech they stole. They’re holding her in detention while they do it. If we help, we shift the balance of power. No one here wants that—they’ll do whatever it takes to stop it."

"If we break her out, we prove the isolationists right. The Federation loses all credibility here. "Or—" She paused, weighing the words. "We kiss the brass ring. Get them to take Jonas back after our doctors save him. In return, they give us Saida and the stolen tech. The local powers get what they want: superiority, security—and maybe even thank us for it in their own twisted way." No one in the room looked like they were holding their breath for that outcome.

"The Federation pulls out with a ‘not right now’ stamped on the whole mess." That was all Beno had, for now. Maybe someone else had something to add.

Jez listened intently as Commander Velaul outlined the situation thus far, something the Commander said sounded familiar somehow, in particular the part about the Mobsters having blocked off-world communications. This reminded Jez of something that happened in the early 21st Century on Earth, during the Ukrainian, Russian War the Russians knocked out the Ukrainian internet capabilities, but a Man named Elon Musk provided the Ukrainians with Satellite internet. What was that called, thought Jez?

What was that called Star-Cross? No,,,Star-Field,,,no…no,,,it was Star-Link!

Jez couldn’t help but notice the similarities between what they were facing and what was happening now.

“Excuse me, Commander, I think I may have a solution to this. What if we provided a subspace rely to the people of Riani, thus negating the Mobsters influence, plus it would sway the general population into a more favorable mindset of the Federation, a winning of hearts and minds as they say and it would break the Mobsters strangle hold on the planet. And if it doesn’t it would allow them to call for outside help, to get needed supplies and technical support.” Said Jez. Her tone is optimistic. “As I recall back on Earth in the early 21st Century, a man named Elon Musk gave the Ukrainian Nation state the use of his Star Link satellite network after the Russian nation state destroyed the Ukrainian computer network.” Added Jez.

Taylor listened to everything as it was being laid out, there was a lot to think about. It almost seemed like no matter what they did something, something bad was bound to happen. Reese was thinking about what he would do in this situation, even if he wasn't an Officer he might have something to contribute.

"Lieutenant as good s that point is, in that case war was already waged. The bigger issue is the fact the Federation I believe wouldn't like it, the Prime Directive would forbid that exact action." Their intentions would be pure in this transaction, it could also be seen many ways by everyone including the the local Government.

"There is a good possibility that Jonas would have been shot if we weren't there, at least this way he had a fighting chance to survive. Chances got higher by the General releasing critical information to our Doctors, it would increase his chances of survival. We can what if all we want, like what if he was going to get shot even if we weren't here?" There wasn't much of a solution he could figure out at this time, in time they could figure something out that might be even better.

Mala wasn't entirely wrong, but what she wanted to do would be detected and they were too likely of suspects. This wasn't exactly the same as a First Contact, as they had warp capability and knew of the Federation. The Prime Directive became a bit less harsh as a result. They could interact with the locals, but use of their technology to do so would be highly scrutinized by the Federation, and they had to be very careful in how they impacted the local governments. This situation was complicated, as is common with any form of government and the balance maintained by it. If they absolutely had to, the crew was likely capable of extracting their people and equipment form the planet. What was more likely was that they were better off leaving it for them and ensuring the safety of the Ambassadors by more open and transparent means. The long range goal was to help the entire planet and establish diplomatic ties with them. Such things didn't happen easily and overt displays of force only tended to look bad for those using them.

Talion offered his view, "How things ultimately play out, with the local government and the Federation, is going to take time and diplomacy. Right now, we're here to try and help them see that it is in their favor to be at that table and have those conversations. We can't force these people into resolving their issues and come to a single world government overnight. When it comes to diplomatic goals, it is never about the individual battles, but is always about the war and seeing that big picture, sometimes over decades or even centuries."

The team’s conversation was interrupted by the quiet whirr of the balcony door sliding open. General Alukh approached slowly, his rumbling footsteps somehow more gentle than they’d been before. Empaths among the group would recognize a feeling of resignation — or perhaps relief — floating above the mechanical static of his surface thoughts.

He nodded to the crew respectfully, then locked eyes with Velaul.

“Sun will come up soon,” he grumbled. “Time to decide: should I tell President Khushku that you’re ready to meet? She usually hosts guests at the old church, the capitol building, although I may be able to convince her to go to you if you’d prefer that. Every satellite on the planet is pointed at your ship, trying to breach your firewall. If the president of Tanndi were to beam aboard, people would start to wonder if she learned any Federation secrets. Rumors like that are powerful things.”

He stood straight and alert, like a soldier awaiting orders.

Her team all had valuable insights about how Her team had all contributed valuable insights on how to proceed—and just as importantly, what to avoid. Even her Second Officer, who had remained silent throughout, had offered something in his own way. As Beno described it, his quiet observations might reveal details she was too close to see. Every angle of this situation needed to be handled with care. However it ended, there would be blowback of some kind.
When the General returned, Beno greeted him again with a warm, practiced smile.

“I believe meeting the President is a strong move,” she said. “Since it’s long been customary to meet at the Church, we should stick to that. Any deviation from an established routine could hurt us. People might start to think we’re manipulating the process behind the scenes. She had considered a few ways to help preserve appearances.

“There’s one thing I’d like to suggest,” she continued. “She should arrive at least twenty minutes after we do. If she sends an assistant ahead to say she’s running late, that positions her as the one in control. Anyone observing will see it as happening on her schedule—which gives her the upper hand, symbolically. That could be important for the negotiations later. If it goes the other way... we risk having that door closed for good.”
She paused, letting the weight of her words settle.

“We also know that since we arrived, all eyes have been on us. Ironically, the factions working against each other have given us a kind of shield—an extra layer of security.”

Sharing that information was a deliberate move—an offering of trust and respect.
“One last thing, General,” Beno said, placing her drink down and standing up straight. “It’s customary for one soldier to show respect to another like this.” She delivered a sharp, respectful salute. “Stay safe out there.”

Now, they had to get to the Church. That meeting would define everything that followed.

Shione had broken from the group but she had maintained vision on them. She had picked up a jacket she found on the back of a chair in a park and used that to cover her uniform.

She had let her hair down and concealed her weapon, carrying her comm badge in her left hand leaving her phaser hand open should it be needed. Listening on the comm. She witnessed the meeting with the General and as he stepped away, she chirped Talion's badge.

"I'm close; do you and the Commander want me in or shadowing. I think it's possible that I am being surveilled, but I could stay at a distance, and follow.

It's your call Alex, or yours Commander; lemme know."

Jez listened as Commander Velaul outlined the meeting with the President, the idea of holding it in a Church made Jez feel uneasy, the idea of using a Church might offend certain parties. Some might even find it offensive.

“Excuse me, Commander, but is a Church really the best place for such a meeting, I Mean it might offend those of a religious persuasion, if outsiders or non-believers; who in their view might be desecrating their holy sites and what about the factions that believe in the separation of Church and State. I would suggest holding the meeting in a museum, or a theater, somewhere neutral.” Suggested Jez.

To hide his desire to roll his eyes, Alex simply closed them for a second while he suppressed his sigh. He then remained focused and opened them again before saying to Mala, "That power to offend or appease needs to be in the hand of their President, not dictated by us. That's part of what the First Officer is trying to place in their hands. There is obviously a reason they prefer that location. To suggest that they change it, challenges that authority."

At hearing Shione's concerns, he replied to her, "I advise that we stay together unless we're forced to do otherwise."

Jez didn’t need her telepathic abilities to know what was going through Commander Tallion's mind, his body language screamed volumes.

Jez stood there as Commander Tallion added his verbal ideas, "That power to offend or appease needs to be in the hand of their President, not dictated by us. That's part of what the First Officer is trying to place in their hands. There is obviously a reason they prefer that location. To suggest that they change it, challenges that authority."

Jez wanted to give him a good smack sometimes, to shake loose what's in his head, clearly sometimes he missed the bigger picture, but it was hard to be mad at Commander Tallion, it was like being mad at a kitten or a puppy as they are so adorable.

“Commander, with all due respect, I think you missed my point. If we agree to the meeting at the Church, it may look to other factions that the Federation supports the religious factions, but to other factions, it may come across we are infidels trespassing in their holy sites, as I doubt any member of our crew practices any of the religions of the Riani’s various nations. For example, a Muslim would take great offense if non-beliver entered a Mosque, a gentile entered a Synagogue, or a Satanist entered a Christian Church. Then what about the factions that maybe don’t believe in a higher being? What will they think? We have to make sure that we don’t offend anyone or exclude anyone or we will never get these people to the negotiation table.” Stated Jez, her tone firm but respectful.

Jez let her words linger a bit, then turned to Commander Velaul and added, “Commander Tallion I stand by my original statement about holding the meeting some other place than the Church, what about a Planetarium, Sporting Venue or a Historical site? Suggested Jez.

Alex's expression remained neutral, but he allowed a small sigh to escape him. There was no point trying to explain it to Mala further. It would serve no purpose. How the planet sorted out their differences and who offended one another were not for this crew to sort out. The planet had to solve those issues without them fixing them for them, or manipulating them along the way. If there was to be such assistance and guidance, then it had to be though the Ambassadors. The only way the crew could step into that role was if the Captain did so, as the General Orders did allow for a Captain to step in and act as an Ambassador, if the situation called for it.

Based on what Alex knew of this planet so far, he would guess that it might be a number of years before they were able to sort out their differences enough for the Federation to be able to work something out with them. He didn't admire the job the diplomats had ahead of them. WHo offended each other on the planet while those things were sorted out was not something they should be trying to alter without better input from the Ambassadors. They didn't have a full briefing on what had been done thus far, nor what pieces were in motion for the benefit of future gains.

Glancing around the room, it was hard enough trying to simply assist the mission in an advisory capacity. Alex felt it was not the time or place to try and teach Mala a class on General Orders, regulations or the finer points of the art of diplomacy within the Federation. She had a great deal of knowledge and even more experience than the average crewman, but it was not what was in the text books that she needed to understand. That was where experience in the field and apprenticeships came into play. He had been in dire need of it in his youth and had learned a great many hard lessons along the way. He supposed she would have to learn her lessons the hard way as well, but hopefully not at the cost of too many lives along the way.

Listening to both the Commander and the Lieutenant, Beno recognized that they each raised valid concerns. However, there was one critical point neither had mentioned—one that could outweigh the rest.

“Lieutenant,” Beno began, tone measured, “you make strong arguments, as does the Commander. But consider this: you’re invited to a party where the host has made careful preparations. Wouldn’t it be just as disrespectful for a guest to change the location without consent? The same applies here. The President’s plan was deliberate. Altering it now could create complications far worse than what we’re trying to avoid.”

Turning to the Commander, Beno continued, “Commander Kurasa, I leave the final decision in your hands. As our Security expert, I trust your judgment. When you’re given the room to operate freely, I know you’ll keep us safe. She meant every word. Beno had full confidence in her team—especially in Kurasa. And with trust came clarity in command.

Shione listened intently. Mala made points that were valid assuming that the away team actually had the right to make decisions regarding where they were to meet, and they did not!

"Regardless of what we want; we have one primary mission which is to rescue or recover our Ambassador; but in order to remain in good standing with the current government I do not see any better option than to get a meeting with the President at a place and time of his choosing is not only our best choice, but actually is the only one we have.

We do not have the right to dictate to them or their head of state; on this matter. If we are to complete the mission we were assigned then I say we do as they ask and meet where they prefer, We cannot get mixed up in internal politics or religion Lieutenant Mala. Star Fleet protocols are clear in this and though you might feel this is an ethical violation I am afraid that issue cannot determine our actions, so if you require it to be an order I will make it one, but the life of a Federation Ambassador is at stake and it is job one."

She understood Mala's passion but it could not be a part of this discussion. "We meet where they have asked us to Lieutenant and given that Commander Velaul has given me the final say then..."

Shione turned and faced General Alukh, "We are ready to meet General at a time and place of your president's choosing, so shall we?"
proceed?"

She stepped back and found herself next to her Security officer and the enlisted member of her team. She spoke privately and reiterated her point, "We do what we need to do to rescue our people, and as such I do not want to hear any more discussion regarding religion; I trust I have made myself clear. And Mr. Reese I would ask you to take point and maintain your usual high level of vigilance"

There was no anger or emotion in Commander Kurasa's words, simply the tone of a superior officer clarifying order.

Stepping back to where the FO was, "Shall we go?"

General Alukh returned Velaul’s salute, then turned to Kurasa with a look of determination.

“She’ll be there right away. Best of luck, Federation,” he said, pausing briefly before stomping toward the elevator with a few efficient strides.

The away team had a few minutes to prepare before returning to the lobby on the 51st floor of the hotel. The activity that had previously filled the lounge had faded, like the last embers of an abandoned campfire. The away team’s footfalls echoed through the quiet atrium as they approached the transporter room.

The away team materialized onto a transporter pad in a dim room with walls of grey brick. The air here was stale and cold, with a hint of moisture. The building that they’d arrived in seemed much older than any they’d seen on the planet to this point. Modern lights and computer terminals had been installed later, in sharp contrast to the antique construction.

Those with security training would also notice a lump in the ceiling that appeared to be some kind of automated defense system. It remained retracted and inert as the team stepped off the pad.

The transporter room’s lone door slid open, revealing a large circular room that structurally resembled the main chamber of a church. Despite that resemblance, there was no sign of any ritualistic or spiritual significance to the space’s current layout. Practical desks were laid out around the perimeter, likely belonging to Tanndi’s ministers. The leather seats well worn, but empty for now.

“On behalf of the Tanndi nation, welcome to Riani,” a woman spoke. She was tall and thin, with stark white skin and elaborately braided hair. Cybernetic implants as thin as fishing lines ran down her temples and neck like intricate tattoos. She stood in the center of the room, a few paces from where the away team had emerged. “I’m President Samihah Khushkhu — pleased to make your acquaintance. This building is usually open to the public, but due to the sensitive nature of your visit, I asked to meet in private. I believe we have much to discuss.”

She stood calmly, waiting for the away team to approach. The tall windows behind her were tinted pink with the first signs of dawn.

Beno was delighted that there was a show of mutual respect, the true sign of a professional. It didn't take too long for the team to get ready to go, one of the perks of traveling light. Beno waited for the team to become mobile again, and proceeded to the next transport location. There was something eerie about the sound of the echoing effect of shoes on a hard floor, probably some kind of lingering memory of the past.

After the team was transported to the new location, Beno had a quick look at the surroundings. "Its been a couple hundred years since I seen anything like this." She said while moving to the very edge of the trap, from the looks of it they places it there for after hours visitors. Beno knew where to stand before the weapon would normally discharge, it was a calculated risk that would pay out soon.

Beno had a smile as she maintained a friendly voice. "We are honored to meet your acquaintance." Beno started. "My team starting with my security experts, Taylor Reed Jez Mala and Shione Kurasa who is also my Second Officer." After this was all over Beno was expecting an earful from one to all three of them about what she just did.

"Alexander Talion and myself Beno Velaul both Science officers, until I became first Officer. You are right we have a lot to discuss, with little time to do it." She looked up at the weapon on the roof. "I suggest we get started right after I present you with the gift, the bottle of Scotch I had saved until I became Commanding Officer. Right now this is more important than that." Beno wanted to start things off with a friendly tone.

Jez along with the rest of the Away Team materialized onto a transporter pad in a dim room, the walls were of grey brick. Jez couldn’t help but notice the air was stale and cold, with a hint of moisture. The building that they’d beamed into seemed much older than any building that they had seen on the planet thus far. There were modern lights and computer terminals that had been installed later, it was a dramatic contrast to the antique construction. Jez could appreciate the antique architecture, as she had been in many grand ancient buildings

Jez instinctively looked up and spotted a lump in the ceiling that appeared to be an automated defense system, or a forcefield emitter. However, at the moment it remained retracted and inert as the away team stepped off the pad.

The transporter room’s singular door slid open, revealing a grand circular room that structurally bore a resemblance to the main chamber of a church. Despite that similarity, there was no obvious sign of any ritualistic or spiritual significance, no alter or religious signs to the space’s current layout. Pragmatic desks were laid out around the perimeter, likely belonging to Tanndi’s politicians and other elected officials. Jez noticed that the leather seats were well worn, but vacant at the moment. Jez couldn’t help but notice that the Tanndi seemed to have a simple, but understated elegance. Jez couldn’t help but notice the similarity between this chamber and the Ancient Hall of Ministers of Keldana V.

Suddenly a voice caught Jez’s attention “On behalf of the Tanndi nation, welcome to Riani,”
Jez looked up and saw a woman speaking. She was tall and thin, with stark white skin and elaborately braided hair style. Cybernetic implants as thin as micro fibers ran down her temples and neck like intricate tattoos or tribal symbols. The woman stood in the center of the room, a few feet from where the away team had emerged. “I’m President Samihah Khushkhu — pleased to make your acquaintance. This building is usually open to the public, but due to the sensitive nature of your visit, I asked to meet in private. I believe we have much to discuss.”

Jez noticed that the President stood calmly, waiting for the away team to approach. The tall windows behind her were tinted pink with the first signs of dawn. This fact made Jez uncomfortable, the President was here by herself, no body guards, no assistant.

Before anyone took a step Jez whispered to Commander Kurasa, “Commander, don’t you find it strange that President Khushkhu doesn’t have any body guards or assistants with her?” Sid Jez, her voice a mixture of confusion and concern.

Following the Commanders lead Reese looked up at the celling for a second before studying the floor, this looked like a trap that was meant for after hours. There were a number of state secrets that need to remain that way, this was meant to keep them at bay if they made it in.

"A prison without walls." Taylor said quietly to himself. It was impressive to him to have such a system, much like a bouncing betty it wouldn't go off until the pressure was taken off of the trigger. Fortunately the trap wasn't active. "She doesn't require guards, if anything happens to her the political fallout would be severe." He said while going up to join the First Officer, if anything was going to happen to her it would be done to them both.

Talion dutifully fell in step to prepare to move to their next location. He really wasn't interested in meeting thhe President and getting into more diplomatic conversations, but he had little choice. He wanted to simply retrieve their people and their equipment and if these people wanted either, then they cound get them through diplomacy, not violence. He hated bullies and those who got what they wanted through violence. Violence should be defeated through denial and, if needed, superior violence to discourage further attempts. He realized that hiis own opinions were not always the best approach though. His issues with violence were his own flaws and he knew that he was prone to an over protective nature.

He remained silent as they arrived. There was only the smallest hint of a wince as he endured yet another site to site transport event. Talion would never get used to the process. The sound of their footsteps punctuated the atmosphere of the situation and it helped him to mentally brace himself for the meeting.

Reflexively, his mind was listening for any open and unguarded thoughts in the room, as well as emotions. When his name was spoken in introduction, he was looking at their host and gave a subtle but polite nod. It seemed to him that the less any of them said the better for now. Too much time had been wasted already.

When Mala began speculating out loud about things, he wanted to roll his eyes, but forced himself not to. The fact that their footsteps were so amplified should have been her clue that the acoustics of the place were such that it would do the same thing with voices. He made a mental note to ask the CMO if Mala had a medical condition that might require medication to help her control such impulses. He realized that such thoughts were coming to him more often, now that he was a parent, but that was perhaps the side effect of raising a gifted, but sometimes willful child. He never would have thought about behavior in those terms before becoming a parent and those combined thoughts caused him to relax a little as a result, because as odd as it might have sounded to others, it comforted him to think of himself as a parent now.

While the FO was speaking, Alex tried his best to take in the details of the room and all that was going on around him. His gifts might not reveal anything significant, they rarely did, but as a scientist, his powers of observation were often his best source of data.
